The book documents the story of Imelda Marcos, from her birth to her rise as First Lady of the country. Its publication in 1969 generated much controversy, as it shed light on her origins. Prior to the release of the book, Imelda’s origins were hardly known to the public. Mrs. Marcos was furious with the book’s release because she was embarrassed of her poverty and humble origins. Because she was furious with the book’s release, the author, Carmen Navarro Pedrosa, and her family, had to emigrate to the United Kingdom. The book was promptly banned during the Martial Law years. With the Marcoses’ ouster in 1986, stocks of the book sold out immediately.
The book was republished as an ebook in 2013 by Flipside Publishing. It is sold on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Kobo.
